Configuring Your DIY Sign

Last modified by Administrator on 2012/10/11 19:57

To get started, visit http://bustime.mta.info/sign . After choosing a direction of the bus route and adding stops to the sign, you can enter an optional message to appear on the sign and configure the refresh interval.

Adding Stops

To add stops to your sign, first choose a direction of the bus route of interest under "Choose A Direction". The "Add Stops" dropdown below will update with a list of stops serving that direction.

Choose one stop from the "Add Stops" drop down menu and click "Add Stop To Sign". Repeat this process for each stop you wish to add to the sign, selecting a different direction if necessary. Stops can be removed by clicking the "Remove" link next to the stop you wish to remove.

An unlimited number of stops can be added to the sign, but it's recommended to keep the number of stops to no more than 2 for landscape displays or 5 for portrait displays.

Configuring A Message

You can display a short message to users of your sign: offer riders discounts at your business, advertise special offers or promote your website. HTML cannot be used in the message text.

Refresh Interval

Depending on the method through which you connect to the Internet, you may want to set the refresh interval higher or lower than the 30 second default. It is recommended to set the value higher on cellular or wireless connections and lower on faster cable or DSL connections. If in doubt, leave the default setting of 30 seconds.

Configuring Your Computer

After you generate a link using the steps above, bookmark the sign URL or set the sign URL as your browser homepage. Make your browser "fullscreen" for best results. You can usually do this under the "View" menu or by pressing F11 on your keyboard.

Supported Screen Resolutions

The sign currently supports TVs or monitors that display the following resolutions in the indicated orientation:

Landscape orientation (horizontal):

  • 800x600
  • 1024x768
  • 1280x1024
  • 1920x1200

Portrait orientation (vertical):

  • 768x1024
  • 1024x1280
  • 1200x1600
  • 1200x1920

DIY Sign Interface

The DIY Sign shows up to three pending arrivals for each stop configured for display by the sign owner. Use the QR code to visit the mobile page for that stop, or use the stop code to request information from the SMS interface.

The DIY Sign refreshes at an interval configurable by the sign owner, but is never more than two minutes old.
